Three Gentlemen Of The Guitar at Jazz Kocsma

Performance without audience. We have recorded two intuitive pieces some weeks ago at Szeged's Jazz Kocsma on a Saturday afternoon right before the venue's opening hours. This time a trio of Márk Kiss, Gábor Kiss and László Juhász played together - all on guitars. We've used two Behringer C-2 condenser microphones to record, quite poor sound qualitiy, but anyway, here is the result: Mance With Deviance (30:23) and Formance Without Dience (15:36).

Rehearsal and recording at Jazz Kocsma

Yesterday afternoon we tested the superb acoustics of Szeged's new jazz pub before its opening hours. We spent five hours with setting up, playing and drinking beers of course. The trio of two electric guitars and a tabletop violin recorded some lenghty and rather noisy improvisations. The venue is ran by Gábor Kiss, one of our guitarists, truly a nice place to play.

Improv Night with some of London's finest musicians

Jerry Wigens (clarinet), Oli Mayne (vibraphone) and Thanos Chrysakis (laptop electronics) appear for a set of electroacoustic improvisations at Improv Night #7 at Grand Café, Szeged on 14 March. The trio's improvisations are based on spectral confluences and collisions directed beyond a categorical approach to sound. They have worked together and in different formations, in a number of recordings and appearances in London.

Jerry Wigens is an improviser and composer who plays clarinet and guitar. His interest in improvised music started at an early age when he attended one of John Stevens' workshops at the age of nineteen. Since then he has worked in various musical contexts including, more recently, an involvement with contemporary composition. He has studied with Roger Redgate and participates in Eddie Prévost's eminent workshop sessions which he has occasionally convened in Prévost's absence. He also plays guitar with Oli Mayne in the improv band called Astrakan.

Oli Mayne is an experimental vibraphone and analogue synthesiser player, with an emphasis on intense, physical performances. He first encountered improvisation in a duo with a Brazilian pianist whilst living in Nottingham, England, but got more seriously involved in the experimental side of things after moving to London, attending the weekly improvisation workshops run by Eddie Prévost of legendary improvisation group AMM. He has appeared at various London improvisation events and venues, including the "Freedom Of The City" festival run by Prévost, Evan Parker and Martin Davidson.

Thanos Chrysakis' output consists of composition, performance, and installation. He was born in Athens, Greece in 1971, residing for the last ten years in the UK. His work has appeared on various independent labels, and events in various countries. He composes for electronics, acoustic instruments and environmental sounds, focusing on the structural and aesthetic capacity of sonic matter. His work "Inscape 5" was amongst the selected works at the International Competition de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges 2005, in the category œuvre d'art sonore électroacoustique.

The performance of the trio will be supported by the duo of Matthew Mitchell {guitar, baritone saxophone} & Resch Béla {double bass}, Trio Free Radio and Brand #34. As usual, there is no entrance fee. The schedule should be something like this:

21.00 Trio Free Radio (H)
21.30 Jerry Wigens + Oli Mayne + Thanos Chrysakis (GB-GR)
22.00 Matthew Mitchell & Resch Béla Duo (NZ-H)
22.30 Brand #34 (H)
23.00 Matthew Mitchell + Jerry Wigens + Béla Resch + Oli Mayne + Thanos Chrysakis (NZ-GB-H-GR)

S8 Improv Collective goes Romania

S8 Improv Collective has been invited to Simultan Video & Media Arts Festival to Timisoara, Romania. On 24 October, Friday a quintet will play at venue Setup after Goh Lee Kwang (MAL), Szabolcs Veres (H), Marek Brandt (D), Yvat & Adrian Tabacaru (RO) and Aide Auditive (F). This time we are going to be loud and noisy, and of course use several S8 home movies edited in real time with a mixer.

Simultan Festival is an annual festival for video, media art, experimental electronic music and a/v projects. The festival wishes to sustain and to stimulate the creative ways of the most modern visions of perceiving and recording the cultural realities in contemporary art. It presents the current processes and the way in which technology and society give rise to new forms of artistic expression by using the new media. Based on a different theme every year, the festival presents video art projections, live performances, installations, lectures.

The festival is an international platform for the audio-video concepts, intending to support and broadcast the new movements and trends of the contemporary culture, such as video art, new media, soundart, experimental and electronic music. The festival wants to keep up with and to stimulate the creative ways of the most modern visions of contemporary culture, of those who belong to the contemporary spirit, by presenting the current processes and the new tendencies and by establishing new cultural bonds on the stage of Romanian and international art.

This year under the theme "Temporary Tactics", Simultan 04 explores a conflict situation, a difficult cohabitation between the independent audio-visual works and the cultural, social and political context in which they are born. "Temporary Tactics" wishes to highlight time and space connected "speculative" situations, the practice of acting and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment.

Privatelektro Headphone Festival in Pécs

On May 9th and 10th S8 Improv Trio plays two autonomous and two collaborative gigs in Pécs at this year's Privatelektro Headphone Festival organized by Marek Brandt of German record label Privatelektro. The invited performers are Manami N. (J), Miyazaki Shintaro (CH), Sven Ihlenfeld (D), Tilman Schmidt (D), Pedro Moura (P), Nosral Flow (D), Readymedia (D), 33 (D) and triPhaze (D). Looking forward...

After offering some intimate listening moments in Leipzig, Germany last year, Headphone Festival moves to Pécs, Hungary for this year's edition. Organising German label Privatelektro has again invited a colourful array of sound artists from diverse genres for one of the more unusual festivals on the experimental scene.

As Privatelektro has revealed: visitors to the festival will be given a fm radio with integrated headphones with which to receive the performances. Alternatively, visitors can bring along their personal headphones and plug into docking stations at "listening islands" designed for relaxing listening sessions - or even use their mobile phones as a receiver.

One of the novelties for the 2008 edition of the Headphone Festival will be the addition of more or less spontaneous collaborations, adding a strong improvisational element to the proceedings and offering a slew of fascinating musical dialogues and exchanges.
